NPI verification: what it does, and what happens to the number

NPI verified once. No employer sees your identity. Verification unlocks physician-only benchmarks and keeps the compensation dataset clean. It is optional; nothing on the platform is locked behind it.

What you enter

Your NPI number and last name, once.

What is checked

Against the CMS National Provider Registry (public domain): the NPI is active, it belongs to an individual clinician (NPI-1, not an organization), and the last name matches.

What is kept

The verified status and the registry’s credential and practice state. The NPI number itself is not stored (the platform dropped raw NPIs at rest in August 2026).

Who sees it

No one. No employer, recruiter or other member is shown your identity; the verified badge is a status on your account, not a public profile.

What it unlocks

Physician-only benchmarks: your contributed compensation counts toward the 30-physician display floor, and you can read the contributed benchmark once a cell clears it. Verified and unverified submissions are never pooled.

What it protects

The dataset. A benchmark built from unverified submissions is the thing every recruiter survey already is; verification is the only quality signal the data has.

Medical students
